Should I repair or replace my asphalt driveway?
Whether to repair or replace your asphalt driveway depends on many factors, including the driveway’s age and current condition. Although asphalt driveways can easily last for 35 or more years, many experts recommend replacing those that are more than 20 years old and beginning to show signs of age. In this case, it is likely that you will experience more and more problems, so it is often better to start over.
Mildly damaged asphalt is easy to patch. Small areas of more severe damage can be entirely removed and replaced through a more extensive process known as dig out patching. If you have multiple moderately damaged areas, or a few badly damaged spots, complete resurfacing will restore your driveway to a like-new condition. However, some driveways are just too far gone to be resurfaced.
If you have more than a handful of completely failed areas, dig out patching and resurfacing are simply too labor intensive to be cost effective. In this case, it is best to replace the entire driveway.
